30/60 Spa Getaway

Celebrations are a good thing!  Especially when you can celebrate with someone special!

This summer, both my daughter and I are reaching birthday milestones!  I’m thinking by looking at the title of this blog – you can guess which is hers and which is mine.

We usually plan a summer getaway each year and head out to Montauk; tons of relaxing at the beach & pool, walks through town, night walks on the beach, chatting, reading, chatting, reading, and more chatting - and of course our days are scheduled around delicious meals!

As a special birthday gift to me this year – a vacation has been planned at Holden Beach, NC.  House on the beach – my children & grandchildren all together for a week of playing together – being together – and of course eating together (can’t seem to get away from that).  This is all to take place early September.  What a fantastic birthday gift!

With this beach vacation planned, my daughter & I decided to look into something different to have our little getaway – and voila – we made our plans!

30/60 Spa Getaway!

Daughter & Mother both reaching milestones this summer!

3 days – 2 nights at Grand Pequot Tower – Pampering at the Norwich Spa at Foxwoods – Swedish Spa Massages – Facials – Manicures – Pedicures – Good Eating – Relaxing – Drinks & Entertainment - More Good Eating . . .

Oh yea – this is going to be good!

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - by Jamie Ford

Moving from the 1940’s to the 1980’s and back, I was taken into both the life & heart of a young Chinese boy caught in a world of anger, discrimination, and hate, to that of an older Chinese man, still mourning the loss of deep friendship and love - in spite of the many years that had passed.

Jamie Ford brought to life the steps taken by our own country, not only to the Japanese living in our country and the Americans of Japanese descent, but also how this effected those that shared this time alongside them.  Knowing this was just a glimpse of the heartache and destruction caused by war, even though this all took place far from the battlefield, it showed how deeply hearts and humanity can be damaged by a time such as this.

Sweet, innocent, young love - common to many - takes Henry & Keiko on an extreme emotional ride, while as young as they were, their feelings are intensified as they are forced to grow up much faster than most their age.

A shameful time that seems so relevant today as well.  Hopefully we have learned from this time to not only be sure we don’t repeat this, but to also understand the power of the human heart; commitment, enduring hope and forgiveness, give power to healing.

A Daughter’s A Daughter for the Rest of Your Life

My daughter turned 30 today – I cannot believe I just wrote those words.  Somehow, someway, 30 years have gone by since the day I found out that I now had a daughter.

You may have heard the phrase, “As son’s a son ‘til he finds a wife, a daughter’s a daughter for the rest of your life.”  This is true, to a point.  I don’t feel I lost my son once he married, but there is a difference in a relationship with a grown daughter, at least for a mother.

My ‘little girl’ has grown into an amazing young woman and she has also grown to be a precious friend to me.  What a blessing to be able to get to a point in life where I can share so many moments with my daughter.  We love being together; shopping, going out to eat, taking in a good (or not so good) movie, sharing weekend getaways and other vacations.  We talk endlessly about our journey in life, our trials and our blessings.  We encourage one another in our faith and so many other areas of our lives.  We cry together and many, many times find ourselves laughing so hard it hurts (many times at my expense).

But the gift I cherish most is seeing how she has grown into an amazing woman of God.  She puts her trust in the Lord and clings to His Word as she moves forward in her life.  When she struggles with situations in her life, although it may seem difficult and sometimes impossible, she still holds on to the hope that can only come from above.  When she celebrates joy and blessings, she is well aware of where the goodness comes from.

Although she works as the Director of Financial Reporting for a corporation in New York City, giving 110%, that is truly not her passion.  She finds time to give so much to our family, our church community, and other ministries she serves in.

Her true passion is for young children, which she serves as the Director of Children’s Ministry.  Not only organizing programs and working with the teachers of our Children’s Church, she also teaches and has won the hearts of even the most hard-to-reach children.
My daughter has directed our Vacation Bible School for many years – reaching out to the children of our community – loving and praying for all the children who attend.  Last year, she was asked to organize mini-VBS programs for our mission trip to Haiti – and did so – touching many in the Haitian villages we visited – bringing laughter and joy to each of the children who attended.

She’s a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, a sister-in-law, an aunt and a friend to many.  In each relationship, all know she can be trusted at all times, she loves with her entire being, and she is a blessing to each.

My daughter – a gift to me – a gift to so many others.  My heart overflows with joy as we celebrate her birthday and as I continue to celebrate the years of having her in my life.

A daughter’s a daughter for the rest of your life.

It's Not My Fault

While watching the news recently, I was once again reminded of how so few ever take responsibility for their own actions, accidents, mishaps, etc.  They are so quick to blame others.

Whenever something seems to happen to the average person – it must be someone else’s fault.  It can’t be just an accident, their own carelessness, nonchalant attitudes, irresponsibility, or even (sorry to say) their own stupidity!

The news headline was as follows:

Parents are being urged to keep laundry detergent packets out of reach of young children after several children have been sickened nationwide.

“Some young children and toddlers who swallow these small packets have become very ill and have required hospitalization,” said the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

Stating that the detergent packets looked very similar to “candy” and that was the reason all these innocent young children are being rushed to the ER made headlines across the country.

REALLY?

Do I need to read the news to be urged to keep dangerous items away from my young children?
Children are known to put almost anything in their mouths – whether they resemble candy or not.  I remember many times grabbing my child with the loud, “What’s in your mouth?” followed by probing my fingers into a slimy, gagging mouth to remove the mystery snack.

But – as I removed these items, I didn’t then look on the label of the product to find the contact info for my upcoming lawsuit.

I am the parent!  Isn’t it my place to “baby proof” my home?  Isn’t it my place to make sure any dangerous items (causing physical injury or poison) are put out of reach?  Isn’t it my responsibility to keep an eye on my child as they are playing, running around, climbing and whatever else they are doing?

I’m not saying that my children were never hurt or never ended up sick due to that “split second” incident.  Accidents do happen - we do sometimes turn our heads and in a blink-of-an-eye children decide to snack on the dust balls, fallen bobbie pins, a penny, or whatever else they happen upon.

I started remembering the many other headlines that always amazed me.

There’s tons of discussions lately on Childhood Obesity.

According to a survey of parents by ACNielsen:

·        Only 1% of parents blamed manufactures
·        7% blamed advertising on TV, etc.
·        9% blamed the child
·        10% blamed fast food companies

REALLY?

Headlines – once again:

McDonald’s Threatened with Lawsuit

McDonald’s has once again been threatened with a lawsuit. The movie Super Size Me interviewed lawyers who had brought lawsuits against McDonald’s on behalf of parents of obese children. When one lawyer was asked why he was suing McDonald’s, he replied, “You mean, other than the monetary gain? You want to hear a noble reason? Ummmm….” We never do hear the rest of this lawyer’s reply. It was edited out.

I knew it was my responsibility to be sure my children ate balanced, healthy meals and snacks each day.  When they were young – I had total control over this – instilling healthy eating habits while they were still in my care.  As a treat, we would go out to a fast food restaurant, and yes, eat the less than healthy lunch or dinner, without veggies, heavy in fat, yet oh so yummy!  And of course there was the surprise toy inside!

They knew this wasn’t the healthy choice, but rather a treat once in awhile and not our regular diet.

“10% blamed fast food companies.”  Who drove their car to the fast food establishment?  Who ordered the fast food?  Who paid for the fast food?  And, of course, who fed the fast food to their child?

Once our children are out on their own, not in our constant care, of course they may make poor decisions – but hopefully we have already taught them the importance of taking care of their health and only occasionally treating themselves to “junk food.”  Most likely, if we made sure their diet was healthy as young children, there is a much less chance for obesity as they step well into their teens and adulthood.

Oh – one of my favorites:

A McDonald's drive-thru customer who suffered burns on her thigh from hot coffee she ordered is suing the restaurant, claiming the coffee was too hot.

Liebeck placed the cup between her knees and attempted to remove the plastic lid from the cup. As she removed the lid, the entire contents of the cup spilled into her lap.

REALLY?

If this is really a problem – then maybe she needs a cup holder installed in her car instead of using her knees – especially for the times she orders “hot” coffee rather than iced-coffee.

And more . . .

There was the case where a man sued a driver for running him over as he was trying to steal the driver's hubcaps?  And the woman who sued a nightclub because she fell and was injured while she was trying to sneak in the back window?

Sally Stewart was shopping one day in Reeds Spring, a small city near Branson, MO, when she tripped on a pothole. She sued the folksy, neighborly small town, which consequently filed for bankruptcy when they didn't have enough money to pay her award.

Oh, and let’s not forget . . .

The workman set up a ladder with its base in some frozen manure, and as the heat of the day kicked in, his ladder slipped in the now less-frozen manure, and he fell and hurt himself.  He then sued the ladder company - maybe they should have put a warning label about manure.

There was also a man in California that was using a public telephone booth to place a call. An alleged drunk driver careened down the street, lost control of his car and crashed into a phone booth. Now, it's no surprise that the injured man sued. But you might be startled to hear whom he sued along with the drunk driver: The telephone company!"

I think you’ll agree that it’s not up for debate whether our country has fallen victim to lawsuit mania.  Unfortunately, the debate continues as to whether our country should enable the millions of people to blame others, not take responsibility, and get paid (big time) for their own actions – accidental or otherwise.

“It’s not my fault” – a statement said immediately to most parents everyday from kids when caught doing something they know is wrong.  Or a statement said for the opportunity to push blame elsewhere and maybe even result in a big payout!

Good Morning!

Good Morning!

What if we were able to wake each morning knowing it was truly a Good Morning?

What if we were able to receive strength for all we will face that day?

What if we could know we will always be loved?

What if we could know we have been called to a life of inner peace & joy?

What if we could know our Creator – personally?

What if we could hear God’s words of wisdom, guidance, and promises for our lives?

What if we could know our eternal destiny?

What if we could feel hope rising within us?

What if each day we woke up excited to begin a brand new day?

We can!

Good morning!

A Mother's Heart

May 13, 1979 I celebrated my first Mother’s Day with my 4-month-old son.  I was on top of the world being a Mom, and this day was a day I was excited to call my own.  I was lucky to be a stay-at-home Mom, and was determined to enjoy every moment as well as be sure to care for my son in a way that would make a difference in his life.

Three years later, I was expecting my 2nd child, my daughter.  I was happily married, one month away from having 2 children, and blessed to be given the challenge of raising these precious little ones.  Life was beautiful!

I was privileged to have many other Moms around in my neighborhood; we became friends, supporters, counselors, and cheerleaders as we all attempted to guide our children each and every day.  Our children became friends, some of which my children are still friends today, and later we shared weddings and now the excitement of grandchildren.

When my children were only 2½ and 6, our family was faced the with the devastation of divorce.  My heart ached with fear and a deep concern at how this would affect my children’s lives.  Together, we moved forward in this new and frightening phase of our lives.

The three of us struggled, grew closer, and learned the hard way about trust, love, and what it takes to truly build a family.  My faith was challenged so many times, but as I look back, I know it was the strength of the Lord that carried us through every single day.  It wasn’t until my faith became real and grew deeply, before I could literally see healing in our home.

I could write about all the struggles, all the tests, all the tears, all the difficult times we experienced.

But what I remember most is – the light in my children’s eyes – their laughter – lots of hugs – story time – bedtime cuddles – game time – building indoor tunnels with blankets – special vacations – silly dancing – movie nights with Chinese food takeout – our first kittens – playground fun - birthday celebrations – Christmas mornings – sleigh riding – silly faces – making our own holiday traditions - learning to ride a two-wheeler – graduations – long conversations – praying together – unbroken promises – hope – and with this year, 34 Mother’s Day celebrations!
